Study of Ionospheric Bending Angle and Scintillation Profiles Derived by GNSS Radio-Occultation with MetOp-A Satellite

Abstract: In this work, a dedicated campaign by MetOp-A satellite is conducted to monitor the ionosphere based on radio-occultation (RO) measurements provided by the onboard GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) Receiver for Atmospheric Sounding (GRAS). The main goal is to analyze the capabilities of the collected data to represent the bending angle and scintillation profiles of the ionosphere. We compare the MetOp-A products with those generated by other RO missions and explore the spatial/temporal distributions se… Show more

“…A comprehensive quality assessment of the bending angle, amplitude, and phase scintillation profiles generated at EUMETSAT is conducted by comparing MetOp-A data against independent measurements. This analysis has been recently summarized and published [9], and a details analysis of the results is out of the scope of the current paper. “…Using ground-based observations alone, with their inadequate geometry for capturing vertical ionospheric structures, leads to models with limited resolution and accuracy. The addition of RO data complements ground-based measurements by enhancing vertical resolution and expanding coverage, especially in the upper layers of the ionosphere [19][20][21][22].…”
