Study of incidence of malignancy in clinically benign thyroid swelling

Abstract: Also, patients in the younger age group had bigger spleens as compared to old (65% vs. 42%). 11 patients also had significant lymphadenopathy, most commonly involving the inguinal group. Average platelet count in younger group was significantly higher than in the older age group (mean 3.63 × 10 5 / µl ± 1.99 vs. 2.62 × 10 5 /µl ± 1.40; P = 0.01) [Table 2]. “…3 A more recent Indian study Karthik et al has pointed out a slightly lower rate of 5.8%. 4 Similar studies on the prevalence of malignancy they detected were as follows-Rehman et al 3.87%, Nanjappa et al 12%, Hanumanthappa et al 10%. [5][6][7] The prevalence of malignancy in multi nodular goitre in the present study, thus well correlates with the results previously obtained.…”

“…This aligns with the investigations conducted in India, where PTC accounts for a prevalence range of 60-70%, and in Nepal, where it represents a substantial 77.42%. 7 , 9 PTC may be more prevalent due to its relation with radiation exposure and high iodine consumption. 10 In alignment with the predominant findings across various studies, our research also concurs that thyroid cancers predominantly affect the female population.…”
