Study of groundwater level and its correlation to soil moisture on peatlands in South Sumatra

Abstract: Hydrological and climatological parameters in several locations on peatlands in South Sumatra have been measured directly by a system called Sensory data transmission Service Assisted by Midori Engineering laboratory (SESAME). The parameters are rainfall, temperature, soil moisture, and groundwater level. This research has studied the groundwater level fluctuations and looks for the correlation between groundwater level and soil moisture in four locations, namely Saleh River 1 (SR1), Saleh River 2 (SR2), Lumpu… Show more

“…As described above, this study also uses a linear regression method.Regression is a statistical method that functions to value of an unknown variable from one or more known variables (Irfan et al, 2020;Yoshihiro, ). Regression analysis is defined as a study of the relationship of one variable called the affected variable or dependent the influencing variable or the independent variable.…”

“…The most felt impact was the massive peatland fires that occurred in the Kalimantan Islands in 2019. The largest peatland fires in 2019 in Indonesia were in Central Kalimantan, which was 134,227 hectares, and West Kalimantan province covered 127,462 hectares [1][2][3][4][5].…”

“…The station is managed by an Indonesian government-owned agency called the Peat and Mangrove Restoration Agency (BRGM). This research has used data from the measurement results of the BRGM station in Kalimantan, especially the rainfall and groundwater level data combined with the hotspot data from NASA's MODIS satellite measurements [7][8][9][10].…”

“…This minimal rainfall has resulted in severe drought and fires on ine peatlands. This period is called the extremely dry season, which occurs from July 2019 to December 2019 [7][8][9][10]. Meanwhile, in 2020 the opposite phenomenon occurred where there was more rainfall than normal conditions during the dry season [11][12].…”
