Study of Dynamic Flow and Mixing Performances of Tri-Screw Extruders with Finite Element Method

Abstract: There is a special circumfluence in the center region of cross-section for a tri-screw extruder. To study the effect of the dynamic center region on the flow and mixing mechanism of the tri-screw extruder, 2D finite element modeling was used to reduce the axial effects. Based on the particle tracking technology, the nonlinear dynamics of a typical particle motions in the center region was carried out and the mixing process in the tri-screw extruder was analyzed with Poincaré maps. Moreover, mixing evaluations … Show more

“…According to the literature, first triangle-arrayed triple-screw extruder was designed by a research group from Beijing University of Chemical Technology and was patented in 2001 [28], while first trials in industrial scale were performed in 2006 [29,30]. This new equipment for polymer processing, provides advantages in compounding of polymeric blends and composites.…”

“…where ½Ti(OR) 4 denotes the inorganic precursor concentration, h 0 prec denotes the zero-shear viscosity of the inorganic precursor, and h 0 pp denotes the zeroshear viscosity of PP matrix. According to equation (12), the zero-shear viscosity of the nanocomposite fluid considering 10 wt% precursors is listed in Table 2. 35 The conversion rate of sol-gel process can be defined as…”

“…Lots of researchers focused on the heat transfer of nonreactive polymer processing in the mixer using two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) non-isothermal models. [10][11][12][13][14][15] Typically, Campanelli et al 13 developed kinetic, thermodynamic, and rheological equations to calculate batch temperature, torque, and power consumption in an internal mixer. Ishikawa et al 14 developed a 3D steady-state non-isothermal models to analyze the temperature profiles in a nonintermeshing continuous mixer using the FEM.…”

“…In a way, although similar in structure and design to the twin-screw extruder, the tri-screw extruder is different from the twin-screw extruder in the flow and mixing mechanisms. From previous researches, it is known that most of particles initial distribution in the inlet plane of the center region fast flow out the outlet and don't pass through any screw in convey element of the tri-screw extruder (Hu et al, 2006;Zhu et al 2013). This special phenomenon may be changed in the kneading disks with the forward or backward stagger angles for the tri-screw extruder.…”
