Study of Corrosion Inhibition Properties of Novel Semicarbazones on Mild Steel in Acidic Solutions

Abstract: The inhibition efficiency of corrosion on mild steel using acids by three different novel Semicarbazones as inhibitors have been studied using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods. The inhibition efficiency, corrosion rate, the nature of anchoring sites and the adsorption characteristics have been determined from the results. It was found that the newly synthesized compounds behaved as mixed type inhibitors with high inhibition efficiency. The inhibition … Show more

“…Aggressive acid solutions like hydrochloric acid (HCl) are extensively used in industries during the manufacturing of metallic equipments and in other applications such as acid pickling (Verma et al, 2020). During the pickling process, HCl leads to the corrosion of metal vessels and industrial pipelines, thereby reducing the production and resulting in the economic loss (Uhlig and King, 1972;Govindasamy and Ayappan, 2015). To circumvent the corrosion initiated by HCl, corrosion inhibitors are utilized.…”

“…Ionization energy (I) and electron affinity (A) which are related to the energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital (EHOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (ELUMO) and molecular weight of each molecule were all calculated using Eq. 1-4 [17,[20][21][22]: (1) where μ is the chemical potential, its the negative of the electronegativity χ for N-electron system with total electronic energy E and an external potential v(r), which has been defined as the first derivative of E with respect to N at constant external potential v(r).…”

“…Corrosion is one of the major means through which metals deteriorate. Most metals get corroded when they are in contact with aggressive medium such as moisture in the air, acids, bases, salts, oils, aggressive metals polishes and liquid chemicals [1]. Also, when metals are exposed to gaseous materials such as formaldehyde, acid vapour and sulphur containing gases, they undergo corrosion [2].…”

“…This results in electric neutrality of the system. The presence of a double layer near the electrode surface is equivalent to a capacitor, which is the foundation of this method [20]. The main benefits of carrying out electrochemical impedance spectroscopy on weld specimens assist in providing information on corrosion kinetics and morphology of the corrosion.…”
