“…These data indicate that the metal ions are unevenly distributed between the protein molecules: some protein globules may sorb the maximal quantity of Cu 2+ ions, possible under given conditions, while the others remain practically unpopulated. Just this type of distribution was found previously at complexation of linear polyanionic and polycationic PE with Cu 2+ ions. , The PE−Cu 2+ complex exists as a chelate with carboxylate groups bound by copper ions. According to the literature 38-42 BSA has one specific binding site for Cu 2+ at the NH 2 -terminal tripeptide segment (Ala-Ala-His ...) involving the Asp α-NH 2 , His N(1) imidazole, two deprotonated peptide nitrogens (Ala NH and His NH), and the Asp COO - group.…”

“…This is similar to the effect of FeCl 3 on poly(acrylic acid). 15,22 Analysis of the product showed the metal ions to distribute unevenly between the macromolecules, forming an iron-rich fraction that precipitated and an iron-free fraction that stayed in solution. The crosslinking species has been shown to be FeCl 2ϩ using infrared spectroscopy 15 ; similarly, therefore, in the Fe(NO 3 ) 3 -poly(acrylic acid) adduct, the crosslinkers are likely to be Fe(NO 3 ) 2ϩ ions, rather that Fe 3ϩ ions.…”
