Study of Bacterial Pathogens in Urinary Tract Infection and their Antimicrobial Sensitivity Pattern

Abstract: Background: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common bacterial infections in Bangladesh. Antimicrobial agents are used for its treatment. The increase in antibiotic resistance among uropathogens is a global problem. Objective: This study was designed to find out the prevalence of UTI, its causative agents and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns among suspected patients of UTI attending Dhaka Dental College Hospital, Dhaka.Methodology: This cross-sectional study was carried out in Dhaka De… Show more

“…Our study revealed that E. coli (32.08%) was the most dominant UTI-causing bacteria and this finding is comparable with a previous study (31.5%) in India (Subramanian et al, 2011). However, The present report does not agree with the results of other studies in Bangladesh where relatively higher rates of E. coli (59.30%-92.30%) has been documented (Haque et al, 2015;Parveen and Rahim, 2017;Rahman et al, 2009;Rahman et al, 2014;Yasmeen et al, 2015). The second most frequent uropathogen in our study was Staphylococcus saprophyticus (24.53%).…”

“…It is on record that lower rates of 9% and 16.4% in Bangladesh and 12.7% in India, have been reported by some authors (Ahmed et al, 2008;Begum et al, 2006, Rahman et al, 2014. Other previous authors recorded higher UTI prevalence rates of 32.25%, 48.5%, and 66.15% in Bangladesh (Hossain et al, 2017;Moue et al, 2015;Parveen and Rahim, 2017). The high or low UTI incidence rates may be Frequency (%) attributed due to the subjects residing environmental condition.…”

“…E Coli is the most commonly encountered human pathogen which has been associated with various clinical manifestations like UTI, diarrhea, abdominal infections, pneumonia, meningitis, wound and soft tissue infections, bacteremia etc 1 There are reports from different regions of India and other countries on antimicrobial sensitivity pattern of E coli isolated from various clinical samples like urine 2,3,4,5 , skin and soft tissue infections 6 , stool 7,8 , sputum 9. blood 10 . The prevalence of ESBL producing E coli is increasing and resistance to E coli varies in different geographical regions 11 .Analyzing resistance pattern of Escherichia coli to commonly prescribed antibiotics in the clinical practice is essential and helpful in improving the efficacy of empirical treatment.…”

“…Women are more affected by UTI than men because of their physical structure though men over the age of 60 years with prostatic hypertrophy are at a greater risk. 4 Some factors such as gender, age, race, circumcision, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), diabetes, urinary catheter, genitourinary tract abnormalities, and pregnancy are the major risk factors for UTIs. 1,[5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] UTIs can be community-acquired or nosocomial.…”
