Study and test of a new superconducting inductor structure for a synchronous machine

Abstract: International audienceIn this paper, we present a new kind of superconducting inductor for the synchronous machine. This inductor is composed of a two superconducting coils having the same axis and fed by a currents with the same direction. A superconducting bulk is used in order to achieve a variation of the flux density in the air-gap. The superconducting bulk is surrounded by a ferromagnetic material in order to improve the radial component of the flux density in the air-gap. With the proposed superconducti… Show more

“…Under certain conditions, a superconductor can be used to trap a magnetic field, but also as a field shielding device to guide the magnetic field lines. The material is then used, no longer to channel the magnetic field as one usually did with the ferromagnetic materials, but to deviate it is the diamagnetic effect screen effect to create a new structure of a flux barrier superconducting machine [19][20][21][22][23].…”

“…Thus, the power has been increased to 66% compared to the single superconducting inductor. El Hassan et al [ 18 , 19 ] installed a circular screen bulk between the two solenoids in a way to be in an inclined position. This prototype resembles the engine of the claw pole in its operating principle.…”

“…By adding an external three-phase armature, we obtain a 2-pole synchronous machine (Fig.1.c). This machine can be seen as a claw pole type synchronous machines which can develop a high electromagnetic torque due to the increase in the level of flux density in the air gap [6]. This is the structure, with complex geometry, that we propose to model with the meshed reluctance network approach.…”

“…The principle is based on the modulation of the magnetic field obtained by the exciting coils using superconducting screens [3]- [5]. High air-gap flux density values are achieved which result in compact machines suitable in marine, wind turbine and aircraft industries [2], [3]- [6]. The design of such superconducting machines requires the study of highly non-linear magnetic field diffusion in superconducting materials (excitation coils and screen).…”
