The performance of Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is highly dependent on the processes that are implemented in the Medium Access Control (MAC) sublayer regulated by the IEEE 802.11 standard. In turn, various parameters affect the performance of the MAC sublayer, the most important of which is the number of stations in the network and the offered load. With the massive growth of multimedia traffic, research of the network performance depending on traffic types is relevant. In this paper, we present the impact of a high-/low-priority traffic ratio on WLAN performance with different numbers of access categories. The simulation results show different impact of high-/low-priority traffic ratio on the performance of the MAC sublayer of wireless LANs depending on different network-sizes and on network conditions. Performance of the large network with two access categories and with the prevalent high-priority traffic is significantly higher than in the case of using four categories on the MAC sublayer. This allows us to conclude that the performance improvement of the large network with the prevalent high-priority traffic can be achieved by an adaptive adjustment of the access categories number on the MAC sublayer.

Many types of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) are used to provide audio or multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, multimedia communications became very easy by using applications that provide Internet Protocol VoIP like Skype, Viber, WhatsApp, etc. And network simulation has frequently been used to determine the performance feasibility of any network protocols and the model reliability before practical implementation. Several kinds of studies were carried out on voice efficiency over different types of networks environment, among these experiments and researches, finding a better signaling protocol for communication by evaluating and analyzing the performance of the protocols, such as the most commonly used Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and (H.323) signaling protocols. This paper provides a comparative study of the performance of the two aforementioned protocols that are most widely used over the IEEE 802.11a wireless network by using the QualNet simulator. The study was performed by analyzing the data packets for both initiator and receiver for both protocols, to evaluate the performance based on five metrics: Session total Bytes, Establishment time, Sent, total Bytes received of Real-time transport protocol (RTP), Average End to End Delay and Overall Throughput. The outcomes demonstrated SIP protocol ascendingly rise and superior over H.323 protocol as a permanently started from the Zero-point around 5.4 (Mbps) of the time until the end of the experiment close to 6.2 with a 0.05-s delay while the rival was always below these values of throughput. The telecommunications industry is currently moving towards the trade of Internet services. However, with the extension in terms of enterprises sites, the quality of transported traffic can be influenced. Given that the nature of deployed application vary periodically and become more and more demanding in terms of delays, the scalability need can lead to a dysfunction of the latter. In this paper, we will measure and evaluate the impact of multiples clients on the performances of the network and the transported applications. This study was done under the Riverbed Modeler simulator. The traffics used for the simulations is Voice over IP (VoIP). The evaluation criteria are on the jitter, the end-to-end delay, and the VoIP loss rate.
