Studies on thermal and morphological properties of 1,1‐bis(3‐methyl‐4‐cyanatophenyl)cyclohexane‐epoxy‐bismaleimide matrices

Abstract: A new cyanate ester monomer, 1,1‐bis(3‐methyl‐4‐cyanatophenyl)cyclohexane has been synthesized and characterized. Epoxy modified with 4, 8 and 12% (by weight) of cyanate ester were made using epoxy resin and 1,1‐bis(3‐methyl‐4‐cyanatophenyl)cyclohexane and cured by using diaminodiphenylmethane. The cyanate ester modified epoxy matrix systems were further modified with 4, 8 and 12% (by weight) of bismaleimide (N,N′‐bismaleimido‐4,4′‐diphenylmethane). The formation of oxazolidinone and isocyanurate during cure r… Show more

“…The morphology and multi-phase structure were characterized. A multicomponent IPN system was created using an epoxy resin, a bismaleimide, a cyanate ester, and components which form a UPR [90]. As the cyanate ester, 1,1-bis(3-methyl-4-cyanatophenyl)cyclohexane was applied, whereas N,N -bismaleimido-4,4 -diaminodiphenylmethane was used as the bismaleimide component.…”

“…Many efforts have been made to overcome their disadvantage [1][2][3]. One of the appropriate reactions is the Michael addition reaction of BMI [4,5] with different nucleophiles such as diamines [6][7][8][9][10][11], bisthiols [12][13][14][15][16][17], bisphenols, etc.…”

“…Thermoset/thermoset blend is a promising approach due to the synergistic effect exists in inter-cross-linked or interpenetrated polymer networks, producing considerable improvements in some properties. [5][6][7][8][9] For example, the modified resin systems based on BMI and epoxy have shown appropriate properties which improve the toughness and process of BMI resin and the thermal properties of epoxy. 7,8 Although most methods have been developed to improve various properties, there are very few successful examples based on BMI as adhesives.…”
