“…Cell wall did not absorb antibodies nor did the cell-wall polysaccharide react with antibodies to purified teichoic acid ( Knox et al 1970). It may, therefore, be concluded that absorption of antibodies implies their penetration of the cell wall to react with membrane teichoic acid.…”

“…of solution examined for reactivity with antiserum 148 (0.1 nil.) by the quantitative precipitin method (Heidelberger & MacPherson, 1943;Knox et al 1970). By comparison with P-teichoic acid standards, the teichoic acid content of the extracts was estimated.…”

“…The serological classification of group F lactobacilli has been shown to depend on a glycerol teichoic acid associated with the cell membrane and having glucose and galactose substituents : by using a mild phenol extraction procedure the isolated product contained both glycolipid and phospholipid, and retained its antigenicity (Knox, Hewett & Wicken, 1970;.…”

S U M M A R YLipoteichoic acid (LTA) and deacylated lipoteichoic acid have been isolated from the bovine-rumen Gram-negative anaerobe ButyrivibrioJibrisoZvens by phenol extraction. Lipoteichoic acid ( 2 1.8 pmol phosphorus/g cells) consisted of a conventional I J-phosphodiester-linked chain of glycerol phosphate units joined covalently to a glycolipid. It was not substituted with glycosyl or D-alanyl ester groups. Deacylated lipoteichoic acid (57.5 pmol phosphoruslg cells) was similar in constitution but lacked fatty acid esters. Lipoteichoic acid reacted serologically with antisera to the glycerol phosphate backbone of known lipoteichoic acids. The presence of similar teichoic acid polymers has also been demonstrated in some other strains of B. jibrisolvens and this is of significance in demonstrating that teichoic acids can occur in Gram-negative bacteria.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
