“…Some commonly used additives that improve growth rate or improve utilization of broiler feeds include bacitracin, in the form of either zinc bacitracin or bacitracin methylene disalicylate (Bird, 1968;Coates and Harrision, 1969;Creek and Schumaier, I960;Damron et al, 1975;Fernandez et al, 1973;Heuser and Norris, 1952;Matterson and Singsen, 1951;Stutz et al, 1983), and 3-nitro-4-hydroxyphenylarsonic acid [roxarsone (Abbott et al, 1954;Bird et al, 1949;Carlson et al, 1954;Frost, 1953;Libby et al, 1955;Milligan et al, 1955;Morehouse, 1949;Morehouse and Mayfield, 1946;Waldroup et al, 1984;West, 1956;Wharton and Fritz, 1953)]. Damron et al (1975) reported that there was no interaction between zinc bacitracin and roxarsone in regard to body weight gains or feed utilization by broilers.…”

“…Libby, Groschke, Evans and Bandemer (1953) and Libby, Evans, Bandemer and Schaible (1955) reported that arsanilic acid at a level of o-oi per cent of the ration significantly increased egg production. Some improvement in egg production resulting from the use of arsanilic acid was confirmed by Creech, Elam, Jacobs andCouch (1955), Couch (1956), Carlson (1957), Thornton and Monreng (1958), Barnett, Richey and Morgan (1959), Heywang (1959) and Kurnick,Pforsich,Pasvogel,Hinds and Dewhurst (i960) although Wharton and Fritz (1953) and Lillie, Sizemore and Denton (1957) found no improvement in egg production, but found that body weight was increased. Later, Carlson (i960) concluded that arsanilic acid was most beneficial when used with birds laying at a slower rate.…”

“…Neither they nor Wharton and Fritz (1953) found any significant effects of the arsonic acids on hatchability or early progeny growth. Lillie et al (1957) concluded after 3 years of experiments with dual purpose breeds that arsanilic acid alone or in combination with fat and antibiotics in 15% protein diets did not influence fertility or hatchability but some positive maternal diet influence was noted in the chicks.…”
