Studies on the Caldwell-Luc Operation with or without Counteropening at the Inferior Meatus

Abstract: The Caldwell-Luc operation was performed on 38 patients with and without the counteropening at the inferior meatus in order to investigate whether the opening is necessary or not. The blood loss with the opening was 108 g more on average than that on the side without it. The operation time was 11 min longer in the group with a counteropening. The differences in these two items were statistically significant. The difference in cheek swelling with both methods was not statistically significant. Postoperative con… Show more

“…Likewise, the clinical studies of Durak and assistants (17) show that the elimination of secretion of the maxillary sinus nasal cavity is directed exclusively towards a physiological opening in a middle nasal hall, and not towards the made opening a lower nasal hall, which was confirmed by the researches of Coleman and Duncavage (18). Similarly, it is important to emphasize that the surgically made opening in a lower nasal hall can cause an injury of nasal lachrymal channel (13) and the bleeding from sphenopalatal artery (19).…”

“…Given the clinical symptoms of the patient, surgical treatment using the Caldwell-Luc approach was decided on. [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21] Under general anesthesia and following oro-tracheal intubation, a Neumann incision was made in the upper right vestibule. After raising a mucoperiosteal flap, a cystic capsule was observed.…”
