Studies on the biosynthesis of riboflavin. Nitrogen metabolism and flavinogenesis in Eremothecium ashbyii

Abstract: Many fungi are known to synthesize riboflavin in small amounts (e.g. Peltier & Borchers, 1947, list 240 flavin-producing species), but there are three which synthesize it and excrete it into the culture medium in very large amounts. These are Candida spp. (Burkholder, 1943; Tanner, Vojnovich & van Lanen, 1949), Eremothecium a8hbyii (Guillermond, Fontaine & Raffi, 1935) and A8hbya go88ypii (Wickerham, Flickinger & Johnston, 1946). Although many patents have been filed covering the commercial production of ribof… Show more

“…During the competition in the utilization of ribose and ribitol for riboflavin synthesis, the organism prefers ribitol to ribose. This supports the view (Goodwin & Pendlington, 1954;McNutt, 1954;Forrest & McNutt, 1958) Ribitol kinase Ribitol kinase, an enzyme similar to ribulokinase (Simpson & Wood, 1968), which phosphorylates ribitol has been detected in this organism. The enzyme reaches its maximal activity on the fourth day of cultivation during active riboflavin synthesis (Fig.…”

“…A extração dessa vitamina foi realizada segundo o método descrito por GOODWIN & PENDLINGTON [6], modificado, de acordo com a Figura 1. Alíquotas do cultivo de C. guilliermondii DM 644 foram coletadas assepticamente e armazenadas no escuro até serem centrifugadas a 3000rpm por 10min para separação da massa celular do sobrenadante.…”
