Nutrition and growth data were collected on six juvenile Komodo monitors (Varanus komodoensis) over 20 months. The animals were captive-bred from two separate clutches, laid 6 months apart. Three animals were fed a rodent diet, and the other three were fed a poultry-based diet. The animals were all weighed and measured weekly. Blood samples were collected monthly. Blood samples were analyzed for sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), 25-OH-D, and cholesterol. Significant differences (Po0.05) were observed in dry matter intake (DMI) (1.12 vs. 0.90 %BW) and gross energy intake (GEI) (182.3 vs. 143.0 kcal GE/d), between rodent and poultry-based diets, respectively. However, there were no differences in growth (average daily gain ¼ 6.13 vs. 6.33 g BW/d) between the two dietary treatments. Blood Na, K, Ca, P, Mg, and 25-OH-D concentrations were similar across treatments, while cholesterol levels were higher in the animals maintained on the rodent-based diet.

Mechanisms of how red-sided garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis) travel up to 18 km from summer feeding sites to hibernation dens are not understood.In this study, monthly and seasonal trailing behavior were investigated to determine whether red-sided garter snakes prefer to follow trails of snakes from the same den (den-mates) versus trails made by other conspecifics (non-den-mates). Snakes from five different hibernacula in Manitoba, Canada, were involved in the study. Eighteen were adults and 15 were subadults. Subadult red-sided garter snakes do not return 2 to hibernacula until their second year of life, so their trailing behavior was of interest in learning how they might first find hibernation sites.Since hormonal factors may play a role in trailing behavior, and, since corticosterone (CS) has been associated with migration and homing in other vertebrates, plasma CS concentrations were also investigated monthly and seasonally.A wooden Y-maze with slots for blocking the two arms was used in the study. Overall, the snakes trailed conspecifics in the spring but showed no preferences for trails of den-mates or non-den-mates. When adults' and subadults' behaviors were studied separately, no significant trai.ling tendencies were observed in the adults. Subadults preferred to follow den-mates in the fall and five weeks' post-emergence, corresponding with the time of migration to hibernacula and migration to summer feeding sites, respectively. Two-way analysis including age as a factor showed no age by month interaction; that is, age appeared to have no effect on CS levels during any particular month.

Blood glucose levels in Vipera aspis show great variations, both between months during the annual cycle, and between males and females. The seasonal variations are clearly related to climatic conditions, and particularly air temperatures and possibilities for thermoregulation. The blood glucose levels of the snakes are very low during the hibernation period and high in summer. Nevertheless, climatic conditions alone cannot explain changes of blood glucose levels observed during the period when the vipers are active, particularly the peaks measured soon after emergence from hibernation (males in February, females in March). Testicular activation, vitellogenesis and digestion need high body temperatures for long periods, thus the blood glucose level in reptiles chould be the result of a balance between climatic and physiological conditions expressed by the thermoregulatory behaviour. Plasma glucose levels are higher when the body temperatures are high and when the vipers spend more time in the sun (e.g. males in February, females in March); however, hormonal factors probably play a role.
