Relations entre la glycémie et l'activité saisonnière chez Vipera aspis L

Abstract: Blood glucose levels in Vipera aspis show great variations, both between months during the annual cycle, and between males and females. The seasonal variations are clearly related to climatic conditions, and particularly air temperatures and possibilities for thermoregulation. The blood glucose levels of the snakes are very low during the hibernation period and high in summer. Nevertheless, climatic conditions alone cannot explain changes of blood glucose levels observed during the period when the vipers are a… Show more

“…For example, a very low glycaemia (<0.4 g/l) can be lethal in endotherm vertebrates (Chajek-Shaul et al ., 1990), whereas it may simply reflect non-pathological natural fluctuations in ectothermic reptiles, where variations are driven by ambient temperatures and reproductive effort (Bonnet and Naulleau, 1993). Consequently, although a very low glycaemia may well suggest serious health problems in an active female during vitellogenesis, it should be considered as normal in a resting and cold female sampled in late summer.…”

“…The study site is 33 ha in extent. The climate is a temperate oceanic one (see Bonnet and Naulleau [1993] for mean temperatures). It is a typical parkland habitat that has not been intensively managed for 15 yr.…”
