The need to find an environmentally friendly, renewable, and biodegradable fuel to reduce the growing dependence on fossil fuels and its attendant performance and emission inadequacies has increased research in biodiesel. Due to its low cost, availability, and a veritable means of waste disposal, waste vegetable oil from restaurants, waste fats from slaughterhouses, grease from wastewater treatment plants has gained prominence as biodiesel feedstock. This present effort compares the properties and fatty acid (FA) composition of neat palm oil (NPO), waste palm oil (WPO), and waste palm oil methyl ester (WPOME). WPO used to fry fish and chips (WPOFC), and waste palm oil used to fry sausage and chips (WPOSC) were collected at the point of disposal. The WPOFC and WPOSC were converted to WPOMEFC and WPOMESC, respectively, by transesterification and subjected to property determination and gas chromatography-mass spectrometer analysis. The characterization showed that the ratio of saturated FA to unsaturated FA changed from 19.64 %:80.36 % for NPO, to 37.67 %:62.33 % for WPOFC, 54.75 %:45.25 % for WPOSC, 30.43 %:69.58 % for WPOMEFC and 16.2 %:83.8 % for WPOMESC. These outcomes can be attributed to the effect of repeated heating and cooling during frying, contamination from moisture, food fried, and the transesterification reaction.

Renewable energy accounts for 33 percent of the primary energy consumption across the world. Current world faces a major waste and climate change crisis. In many developing countries, over the past two and a half centuries, a variety of renewable power techniques have been actively pursued in distinct fields in the fields of research, growth, demonstration, manufacturing, and implementation. A replacement for fossil fuels using waste biomass is essential and considered as a promising strategy to meet our energy needs. At the same time, the emissions of greenhouse gas and managing municipal solid waste have to become crucial due to growing population demand. Biomass includes the energy stored in the sun and plants. It also serves as a primary energy source. Plants absorb the power of the sun during the process called photosynthesis. When biomass is combusted, chemical energy can be released into biomass as heat that can be used for domestic applications. The use of biomass results in management expenses contributes to climate changes, decrease the risk to lives and assets thereby ensure a safe and competitive energy source for the beneficial impact on the environment and the economy. This paper overviews about various applications of renewable energy sources produced from the municipal wastes and microbes. Prospects for the commercialization of bio-algal fuels, applications, and its challenges are discussed. The role of microbes (microalgae) in the energy production process and to use bioenergy as a future trend for economic development is discussed.

Polysulfide Synthesis Using Waste Cooking Palm Oil via Inverse Vulcanization

Elemental sulfur and waste cooking palm oil (WCO) are abundant industrial by-products from petrochemical and food processing industries, respectively. WCO was used as a crosslinker to prepare a high-sulfur-content polymer through inverse vulcanization. Polysulfides were generated under vigorous stirring of WCO with elemental sulfur at different temperatures, crosslinking ratios, and reaction times. The physicochemical properties of the produced polysulfides were determined and the thermal stability was analyzed. The FTIR spectra including the breakdown of C=C and formation of C-S bond confirmed the change of functional groups between WCO and produced polymer. The effect of saturated and unsaturated triglycerides of WCO is clearly visible in SEM micrographs. The polysulfide with a 70 wt % sulfur feed ratio showed excellent morphological and thermal properties.
