Studies on biogenic amine metabolizing enzymes (DBH, COMT, MAO) and pathogenesis of affective illness

Abstract: Platelet MAO activity was determined in blood from 31 healthy persons and 43 persons with endogenous depressive syndrome. It was found that the enzyme activity is significantly higher in women than in men, both in healthy controls and in affective illness groups. Statistically significant lowering of the enzyme activity was found in the group of women with affective illness as compared with healthy women controls (P less than 0.05). Although the latter phenomenon is true of all three diagnostic subgroups of af… Show more

“…However, many studies gave contradictory results. Some authors did not find any difference in COMT activity between healthy and depressed subjects (1 1); others reported higher activity (12) or lower activity (8) of erythrocyte COMT in depressed patients. In a well documented review, Fahndrich et al (13), summarized studies published before the 1980s.…”

“…Several studies failed to find significant modification of M A 0 activity in female depressed patients (19) or schizophrenic female patients (for review see Gattaz et al 44) but did so in male patients. Conversely platelet M A 0 activity was found modified in depressed women but not in male patients (45)(46)(47). In some studies sex and age distribution was not mentioned (4,10,16,18,24,30).…”
