Numerical results for the three mono-energetic transport coefficients required for a complete neoclassical description of stellarator plasmas have been benchmarked within an international collaboration. These transport coefficients are flux-surface-averaged moments of solutions to the linearised drift kinetic equation which have been determined using field-line-integration techniques, Monte Carlo simulations, a variational method employing Fourier-Legendre test functions and a finite difference scheme. The benchmarking has been successfully carried out for past, present and future devices which represent different optimisation strategies within the extensive configuration space available to stellarators.A qualitative comparison of the results with theoretical expectations for simple model fields is provided. The behaviour of the results for the mono-energetic radial and parallel transport coefficients can be largely understood from such theoretical considerations but the mono-energetic bootstrap current coefficient exhibits characteristics which have not been predicted.

Electron cyclotron current drive studies in stellarators are justified for the potential the method holds in the control and compensation of unwanted, pressure-induced, plasma currents, as it has been shown experimentally in Wendelstain VII-AS stellarator [Fusion Technol. 17, 62 (1990)]. In this paper, a method is described to estimate induced currents by electron cyclotron waves that is computationally fast enough to be included in a ray-tracing code, but is able to account for the complicated stellarator geometry. In particular, the modification of the current drive efficiency due to trapped particles effects is included in the calculation. A close-to-Maxwellian electron distribution function and a nearly linear regime are assumed. An application of the method to the magnetic configuration of the TJ-II stellarator under construction in Madrid [Fusion Technol. 17, 131 (1990)] is also presented.

The configuration flexibility provided to the TJ-II Heliac by the helical hard core permits a significant change in the stability properties of the plasma. In this numerical analysis of full three-dimensional equilibria it is found that, by exploiting the flexibility of the machine, the stability beta limit given by the Mercier criterion can be varied almost continuously over values of average beta from zero to more than 6%.
