Studies in the reliability and validity of the critical incident technique.

Abstract: The critical incident technique was applied in analyzing the job of store managers in a Swedish grocery company. About 1800 incidents were collected, mainly by interviews, but also by questionnaires. Several reliability and validity aspects of the method were studied. When two-thirds of the incidents had been classified, 95% of the subcategories had appeared. The structure of the material was not influenced by the methods of collecting or by the interviewers. A repetition of the categorizing procedure was used… Show more

“…Further benefits of CIT include acquiring reports of the most significant and relevant experiences, which typically are highly influential for human behavior [6]. Overall, several studies [e.g., 42,43] have demonstrated that CIT provides both validity and reliability, and is a suitable method for gaining understanding and insights on an undiscovered phenomenon [47].…”

“…CIT is a well-established technique containing "a set of procedures" [6] for collecting, analyzing, and classifying observations of human behavior [42]. CIT allows the FDG'17, August 2017, Cape Cod, Massachusetts USA T. Kari et al 4 respondents to describe the actual use experiences in their own words and can thus uncover valuable information about user behaviors [43,44]. A critical incident is defined as a single experience, which a person perceives as unusually positive or negative [45].…”

“…Usually, more than 100 significant situations are recommended in order to be able to perform an adequate analysis 24 ; however, it is possible to have 50 to 100 significant situations if the investigated activity is relatively simple. 14 It could be discussed whether the activity under study here is simple, but the aim is well defined and the number of significant situations collected was therefore considered adequate.…”

“…Cases were critical searches that were identified using the critical incident technique. [16][17][18] In line with this technique, a search was critical when the clinical situation and the use of information were clearly described.…”
