Studies in cyclic polymerization and copolymerization — XVII. Radical polymerization of substituted divinyl ketones

On the basis of the chain propagation reactions occurring in the course of the free radical polymerization of 1.4-dienes, some relationships between monomer concentration and polymer composition (in terms of either monomeric or structural units) are derived and discussed. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG:Auf Grund der Kettenwachstumsreaktionen bei der radikalischen Cyclopolymerisation von 1.4-Dienen werden einige Beziehungen zwischen Monomerkonzentration und Polymerzusammensetzung (in bezug auf die Typen der Monomer-oder Struktureinheiten) erhalten und besprochen.

By the application of some kinetic relationships between the monomer concentration and the composition of the polymers, in terms of monomeric and structural units, to the products of the free radical polymerization a t 7OoC of divinylether in benzene, it was possible to evaluate the strong tendency of this monomer to give high fractions of monocyclic and bicyclic structural units. Furthermore evidence was given that the residual unsaturations in the polymers belong to monocyclic units, and are not directly pendant from the polymer backbone. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG:Einige kinetische Beziehungen zwischen Monomerkonzentration und Struktur der Monomerbausteine werden auf Polymere aus Divinylather angewendet, die durch radikalische Polymerisation in Benzol bei 70°C erhalten wurden. Divinylather hat eine groBe Neigung monocyclische und bicyclische Struktureinheiten im Polymeren zu bilden. Es wird zu zeigen versucht, da13 die ungesattigten Gruppen im Polymeren an monocyclische Struktureinheiten gebunden sind und nicht an lineare Einheiten der Hauptkette.

Some kinetic relationships between the monomer concentration and the composition of the polymers from 1.4-dienes, in terms of monomeric and structural units, are derived taking into account all the cyclization reactions which can occur in the course of the chain growth. These relationships are applied to the results of the analytical determination of the residual unsaturations in the products of the free radical polymerization at 7OoC of divinylether in benzene solutions. It is shown that the chain growth takes place exclusively by addition of cyclic radicals onto monomer molecules. Evidence is given that both five and six membered rings are formed in the cyclization steps. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG:Einige kinetische Beziehungen zwischen der Monomerkonzentration und der Zusammensetzung (als Monomer-und Struktureinheiten) von 1.4-Dien-Polymeren werden abgeleitet ; dabei wurden alle Cyclisierungsreaktionen, die beim Kettenwachstum stattfinden konnen, beriicksichtigt. Diese Beziehungen werden auf die Ergebnisse der analytischen Bestimmung der ungesattigten Gruppen in den Radikalpolymerisationsprodukten von Divinylather angewendet, die bei 70 ' C in Benzollosungen erhalten wurden.
