Art may be viewed as fetish, in that it forces meaning on a chaotic world -a dynamic which is briefly illustrated in this article by means of Pablo Picasso's famous painting, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. Similarly, translations of the biblical texts, which result from very complex processes, may be viewed as fetishes. Translation thus requires a pro cess of deducing and reducing meaning from relative chaos. A proper view of the nature of the Bible text and the theoretical load of exegetical and translation activities must be cultivated among lay translation users, particularly in our age of rising fundamentalisms. To this end, five suggestions are offered. This view affords Bible translators a more balanced status, namely one of humanity with dignity, than is at times found in some popular circles which regard Bible translators with severe suspicion.

In der Reihe »Orbis Biblicus et Orientalis« erschien 1990 als Nummer 99 ein Band von Thomas Römer: »Israels Väter. Untersuchungen zur Väterthemathik im Deuteronomium und in der deuteronomistischen Tradition«. Römer untersucht darin alle Texte, wo das Alte Testament von Israels »Vätern« spricht. Er zeigt, dass keineswegs immer die drei Patriarchengestalten der Genesis gemeint sind. Für das Buch Deuteronomium stellt er die These auf, dass die Namen »Abraham, Isaak und Jakob« an den sieben Stellen, wo sie stehen, erst von der Pentateuchredaktion eingesetzt wurden. Vorher seien im Deuteronomium unter den »Vätern« die Israeliten des Exodus und ihre ägyptischen Vorfahren zu verstehen gewesen. Die These hätte weitreichende Folgen sowohl für die Rekonstruktion der Geschichte des theologischen Denkens Israels als auch für die Lösung des Pentateuchproblems. Dieser nur ein Jahr später folgende Band 111 von »Orbis Biblicus et Orientalis« ist eine Antwort an Römer. Er ist aus dem Versuch einer Rezension von Römers Buch entstanden. Er beschränkt sich auf das Zentralstück von Römers Buch, die Untersuchung des Deuteronomiums. Lohfink analysiert Römers Methoden und die wichtigsten Einzelargumente. Er kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass Römer seine These für das Deuteronomium nicht bewiesen hat. Unterwegs legt er auch eine Reihe eigener Interpretationen zu den diskutierten Texten vor, und zwar sowohl im Deuteronomium als auch in den Büchern von Josua bis 2 Könige. Er schliesst mit einem Ausblick auf das, was sich im Gefolge seiner Analysen für die Pentateuchdiskussion und für die Geschichte des theologischen Denkens in Israel ergibt. Der besondere Reiz dieses Bandes besteht darin, dass Lohfink das Manuskript vor dem Druck seinem Kontrahenten zur Verfügung gestellt hat und dass in einem »Nachwort« dessen erste Reaktion auf die Kritik seiner These schon mitabgedruckt ist. Es ist zu hoffen, dass die Diskussion nun auch durch andere weitergeführt wird. Thomas Römer hat gegen Anfang seines Buches ein Wort von Bernhard Duhm zitiert. Duhm bekennt, wie viele »vielleicht« bei seiner Arbeit zu schreiben seien, und daß er »für Belehrung sehr empfänglich« sei. Ich möchte nicht einmal belehren, denn ich habe in der Auseinandersetzung mit Römers Buch selber viel gelernt und weiß natürlich, wieviele »vielleicht« es auch in meiner Gegenschrift gibt. Aber im Geist des Duhm-Zitats darf Widerspruch auch deutlich ausgesprochen werden. Wenn ich mich frage, worin denn letztlich die Divergenz zu Römer gründet, dann muß ich wohl -jenseits aller Einzeldiskussion -sagen, daß wir offenbar ein verschiedenes Vorverständnis davon haben, was ein Text ist und wie Texte den Leser bei der Hand nehmen.Ich danke vor allem Othmar Keel. Seine Lust am wissenschaftlichen Diskurs hat es möglich gemacht, daß die Schrift in der gleichen Reihe wie Römers Buch erscheinen kann, und derart hurtig. “…To give a flavour of the debate: Van Seters (e.g. Van Seters (1975); Van Seters (1992); Van Seters (1994); Van Seters (1999)) argues that the Yahwist was a historian akin to the Greek historians, writing in the exilic period, while P supplements and responds to his predecessors in around 400BC; Blum that P reworked an immediately post-exilic 'D-Komposition', which itself incorporated an exilic edition of Gen 12-50* and a 'Life of Moses' of around the seventh century (Bium (1984); Blum (1990)); Rendtorff (1990) that various priestly texts, not from a continuous source, have been incorporated into a work formed by the concatenation of separate tradition blocks (primeval history, Abraham cycle, Sinai pericope etc. ); Whybray ( 1987) that one author composed the Pentateuch employing a range of diverse small-scale sources; Nicholson (1998) that '[t]he work of Wellhausen, for all that it needs revision and development in detail, remains the securest basis for understanding the Pentateuch' (p.x).…”

The meaning of Genesis 12:3 is much controverted. This study, considering the final form of Genesis, argues that it is in the first place a promise of security and greatness to Abraham and Israel, but that in its context, following Genesis 1-11, it also indicates a divine plan to extend blessing to all the earth's peoples. In receiving God's blessing, Abraham/ Israel act as models and/ or pioneers of blessing for others. God's actions remain free, but also invite appropriate human response.Examination of the near-parallels to Genesis 12:3a in Genesis 27:29b and Numbers 24:9bshows that they are concerned more with the security of the person blessed than with the possibility of others gaining blessing.Detailed discussion of the Hebrew niphal concludes that it normally has either passive or 'middle' force (and is very rarely reflexive). No 'middle' sense found elsewhere for the niphal plausibly fits '-'li:::l, and hence the niphal in Genesis 12:3 (and 18:18 and 28:14) is passive: analysis of these passages in their contexts supports this grammatical conclusion.The hithpael in general this study argues to be usually 'middle' in force, though sometimes passive and occasionally reflexive.
