The government of the Republic of Indonesia has taken serious concern on the development of vocational high schools (SMK) recently. Various supports and programs are given by the government to realize one of the main purposes of ocational education; to equip the students of vocational high schools with the knowledge and, more importantly, skills in the professional world. The newest is the program of SMK Pusat Keunggulan (Center of Excellence). The program aims to develop vocational high schools with certain skill competences to improve their quality and performance through in-depth partnership and alignment with the business, industry, and professional world. One component to take into consideration in any efforts to develop the quality and performance of vocational high schools is to provide the students with English language teaching that is relevant to their skill competences. In fact, the government states that English is one of the subjects that should be prioritized due to the fact that English communication skill is an aspect that will potentially increase the competitiveness of the graduates in the professional world. Therefore the Directorate of the Development of vocational high school has developed the strategic plan through bilingual learning ecosystem to improve students' English proficiency. This study aims to investigate the implementation of English language teaching at vocational high schools in Jember, specifically the state vocational high schools (SMK Negeri). The case study focuses on how ELT is conducted at the vocational high schools dealing with the materials given to the students with various skill competences. Questionnaires were distributed to English teachers teaching at the state vocational schools to gather information whether or not the materials given to the students vary depending on their skill competences. Furthermore, selected teachers from each school were invited into the interview stage in order to confirm and clarify the responses collected from the questionnaires.

Needs analysis as the basis of English for specific purposes (ESP) is deemed crucial to identify the target materials or languages used in the teaching-learning process and to design an effective curriculum. This study aims to investigate engineering students' needs for English-speaking materials in the English club program of one private university in Garut. To address the result of ESP analysis, the researchers used the descriptive qualitative method with questionnaires and interviews as the instruments. The need analysis result revealed that the English learning goal for the students in the English club program is to communicate actively in English. Their interest in learning English in this program is to improve their speaking ability to support their formal study as university students since it influences their academic performance and prepares them to fulfill the demands of job requirements in the future. Most students consider that the materials they need to learn are related to job life, academic purposes as engineering students, and social interaction. The result also suggests that the module created by the tutor for the English club program should focus on topics related to job life that are relevant to the current situation.<p> </p>

This study was to describe how the English syllabus for eleventh graders at the Vocational High School of Hospitality majors in Padang for the 2021/2022 academic year. This study used qualitative approach by using descriptive research. There were five English syllabus collected from five vocational high schools of eleventh grade hospitality majors in Padang. Then, it also used questionnaire to collect the data. There were 30 students who participated to respond the questionnaire, consisting of eleventh grade students and twelfth grade students as eleventh grade alumni. The result of this study showed that the English syllabus used in vocational high schools of the hospitality major was not suitable for their major. Therefore, this study suggested that there was a need for an appropriate syllabus in learning English for vocational students in Padang, especially those majoring in hospitality. This study can be continued to conduct an overall needs analysis that includes English students, their English teachers, principals and alumni.
