Student engagement with statistical design of experiments by active learning projects

Abstract: Abstract-This paper analyzes a real case study based on an islanding power grid, where there is wind power curtailment during the grid operation. This curtailment skews the wind power production database creating a huge challenge to the overall power production forecast. Thus, it is presented a solution which has allowed more accurate forecasts in order to improve the renewable production and reduce the fuel consumption in thermal power plants. The proposed filtering approach demonstrated to be a good solution… Show more

“…The project would also be very effective as a strategy to promote active learning as an instructional activity involving students doing things and thinking about the things that they are doing. The introduction of a project chosen by the students engages them in higher order thinking tasks as planning, analysis, synthesis and evaluation [26].…”

“…However, the application of DOE by chemical engineers in industry is quite limited due to the lack of statistical knowledge in experimental design techniques [23]. There are some examples concerning engineering students with statistical design of experiments by active learning projects [24].…”

“…Many engineers that perform OFAT experimentation fail to realize the advantages of statistically designing experiments until they use the approach and see the benefits of manipulate all the factors at a time and identify important interactions that may be missed when experimenting with one factor at a time [21,22]. There are some examples of student engagement with statistical design of experiments by active learning projects [23].…”
