Structure of13Be probed via secondary-beam reactions

Abstract: The low-lying level structure of the unbound neutron-rich nucleus 13 Be has been investigated via breakup on a carbon target of secondary beams of 14 B was found to populate a broad lowlying structure some 0.7 MeV above the neutron-decay threshold in addition to a less prominent feature at around 2.4 MeV. Based on the selectivity of the reaction and a comparison with (0-3) ω shell-model calculations, the low-lying structure is concluded to arise from closely spaced J π =1/2 + and 5/2 + resonances (Er=0.40±0.0… Show more

“…This fit uses simple Breit-Wigner functions without energy shift [ (E rel = 0)] and without angular dependence of the width [ (E rel ) = r ]. It should be noted that a nonresonant continuum has been estimated using the event-mixing procedure, which is based on the measured pairs of fragment + neutron [54]. This component was added as a free parameter in the fit.…”

“…The transmission (including tracking detectors efficiency and loss of beam and fragment in the thick MINOS target) is evaluated separately from experimental data taking the average of the values obtained for 12 Be and 14 Be beam transmission (65.0(1)% and 62.9(2)%, respectively), and corresponds to 64(1)%. 12 Be core excited states that decay via gamma emission (2 + , 1 − ) were identified using a reduced version of the DALI2 gamma array consisting of 68 crystals, partially covering angles between 34 • and 115 • and arranged in order to avoid interference with (p, pn) measurement. Photopeak efficiency of this reduced version of DALI2 (called DALI2 hereafter) was 8.9(5)% and 7.0(4)% at 2.1 and 2.7 MeV, respectively.…”

“…To describe the data presented in this work, previously observed states in 13,14 Be [11,12] were included in the simulations. These states are shown in Fig.…”

“…However, the cross section for 2p2n removal is expected to be even smaller than the 2p removal. For the two-proton removal, a single resonance in 15 Be was assumed to decay via the 280-keV state in 14 Be and the α removal was allowed to populate any of the three previously measured resonances in 13 Be [11], shown in Fig. 1.…”
