Structure Model Index Does Not Measure Rods and Plates in Trabecular Bone

Abstract: Citation:Salmon PL, Ohlsson C, Shefelbine SJ and Doube M (2015) Structure model index (SMI) is widely used to measure rods and plates in trabecular bone. It exploits the change in surface curvature that occurs as a structure varies from spherical (SMI = 4), to cylindrical (SMI = 3) to planar (SMI = 0). The most important assumption underlying SMI is that the entire bone surface is convex and that the curvature differential is positive at all points on the surface. The intricate connections within the trabec… Show more

“…Two different methods are available to compute the SMI: the SkyScan plug-in and the BoneJ plug-in with the Hildebrand algorithms (Hildebrand and Rüegsegger, 1997). As highlighted by Salmon et al (2015), the SkyScan plug-in consistently leads to smaller SMI values than the Hildebrand plug-in. For the sake of comparison with the data of Gregory et al (2014) , Fig.…”

“…Total porosity (Po (tot), %)of trabecular bone of groups G1, G2, G3, and G4 for Pantanal alligator (Caiman yacare) tibia. Salmon et al 2015, Longo et al 2016, 2017, Hsu et al 2016). This technique has been used to for bone quality assessment in different experimental designs as 87 animal species being 69 mammals, 17 birds, and one alligator (Syahrom et al 2011, Salmon et al 2015, Hsu et al 2016, Longo et al 2016, 2017.…”
