Structure and properties of silk fibroin modified cotton

Abstract: In this research, a novel cotton fiber with a silk fibroin (SF) coating was prepared by the oxidation of a cotton thread with sodium periodate and subsequent treatment in a solution of silk fibroin. The structures of both the oxidized cotton samples and the SF modified cotton samples were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) in combination with Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. Other performances such as surface morphology and breaking strength were also studied. The results indicat… Show more

“…As can be seen, there is no significant difference between XRD patterns of the fabric samples treated at different reaction times. The diffraction peaks at 2θ values of 14.78°, 16.49°, and 22.76°corresponding to the diffractions planes (1 0 1), (1 0 1), and (0 0 2) are present in the structure of the cellulosic cotton fiber [33]. The other diffraction peaks (2θ = 31.84°, 34.54°, 36.29°, 47.58°, 56.71°, 62.98°, and Journal of Nanomaterials 67.98°) present in the XRD patterns can be indexed to the hexagonal ZnO with a wurtzite structure (ICSD card No.…”

“…Lin et al. 20 treated cotton fibers with silk fibroin and found the treated fibers had relatively smooth surfaces, similar breaking strength to untreated fibers, and improved wrinkle recovery angles. Xu and Du 21 applied collagen to cotton fibers using a similar preparation for cotton to Lin et al., and reported improved mechanical properties.…”

“…For example, when Lin et al. 20 applied silk fibroin to cotton fibers, the pretreatment oxidation process involved in the fibroin treatment had negative effects on the fiber’s mechanical and tensile properties that varied according to the extent of oxidation.…”

“…3b. Note that -C=N-bond at 398.8.0 eV (Lin et al 2008) and N-H bond at 400.5 eV (Lin et al 2008) were all discovered in N 1s high resolution XPS spectrum (Fig. 3c).…”
