Structure and mechanism of functional isotactic polypropylene via in situ chlorination graft copolymerization

Abstract: This paper discusses the structure and mechanism of maleic anhydride (MAH) grafted onto isotactic polypropylene (iPP) via in situ chlorination graft copolymerization (ISCGC). The molecular structure of the grafted iPP was characterized using 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR spectroscopy, viscosity-average molecular weight and gel content. The structure of un-grafted MAH present in the reaction system was investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in order to explore the grafting of MAH on iPP. The main sid… Show more

“…In literature, it is interpreted as the perfection of the crystal structure during the melting process [15]. With the current study, a very different conclusion is made about the double melting points based on our studies with multiple techniques, including degradation characterization [18].…”

“…For example, antibacterial [12], antifouling [13] and hydrogen storage [14] properties of polypropylene were enhanced via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization [15]. Chlorine atoms on the polymer chains both develop polarity and allow reactive sites for a series of monomer such as acrylates, methacrylates and styrenes [16][17][18][19]. Polymers containing chlorine atoms, such as chlorinated poly (vinyl chloride) (CPVC), poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), chlorinated polyethylene and polypropylene exhibit high fire and cold resistance as well as plasticity.…”

“…CPVC-cg-MAH is a kind of new material achieved through maleic anhydride (MAH) grafted onto PVC via in situ chlorinating graft copolymerization (ISCGC). 11 Compared with other conventional grafting processes, ISCGC is a novel, convenient, and economically feasible method to prepare graft copolymers, and it has been successfully applied to PE, 12,13 PVC, 14 and PP 15,16 modification in our previous works. In this process, PVC is chlorinated or grafted using the mechanism of free radicals.…”
