Structure and evolution of Cenozoic arc magmatism on the Antarctic Peninsula: a high resolution aeromagnetic perspective

Abstract: S U M M A R YThe Antarctic Peninsula (AP) consists of a long lived and uniquely well preserved magmatic arc system. The broad tectonic structure of the AP arc is well understood. However, magmatic processes occurring along the arc are only constrained by regional geophysical and relatively sparse geological data. Key questions remain about the timing, volume, and structural controls on magma emplacement. We present new high resolution aeromagnetic data across Adelaide Island, on the western margin of the AP re… Show more

“…These materials are important to determine the magnetic anomalies distribution within the structures of the Pacific margin of the West Antarcticа, where part of the territory is not covered by the detail surveys. These data gave a new important information about the geological structure, formation history of the basic structures and features of geodynamics of West Antarctica (Ghidella et al, 2011, Jordan et al, 2014.…”

“…This aeromagnetic interpretation, however, is subject to debate, with more recent studies favoring long‐lived in situ arc to back‐arc magmatism in the Antarctic Peninsula throughout the Mesozoic (Burton‐Johnson & Riley, ). Higher‐resolution aeromagnetic surveys across Adelaide Island (Figure ) also suggest emplacement of extensive Paleogene and Neogene magmatism along part of the inherited Mesozoic arc/fore‐arc boundary (Jordan et al, ).…”

“…For these surveys, turns between lines need to be as efficient as possible, while maintaining lock to GPS navigation satellites. However, in some circumstances variations in elevation exceed aircraft performance and draped flight planning must consider both terrain and aircraft performance (Jordan, 2014).…”
