“…It is not my purpose here to prove that an extension of Dell et al (1993) can account for all the known facts about irregular and regular past-tense forms, merely to show how the model situates morphological and phonological processing at the same point in time, so that interactions such as those reported in this paper can arise. It is likely that any one-step model will derive the effects in a similar way.…”

“…Joanisse and Seidenberg (1999) is the only implemented one-step connectionist model of morphology, and it must be evaluated to see whether it can derive the phonological effects reported here. Stemberger (2002) and Stemberger and Middleton (2003) have argued for an extension of the model of Dell et al (1993) for phonological processing. I will sketch how the effects reported here might arise in the model of Dell et al, with the clear recognition that simulations are needed to confirm that such models will in fact work in the way that I am suggesting.…”

“…This position has been adopted by many proposals that focus specifically on how phonotactic constraints are encoded by speech production processes (e.g., Dell, Juliano, & Govindjee, 1993;Harris, 2002;Stemberger, 1985;Vousden et al, 2000;Wheeler & Touretzky, 1997). However, not all theories have shared this assumption.…”

“…Following Botvinick and Plaut (2006), our model took the general form of a simple recurrent network (SRN), which is a type of neural network architecture that has been widely employed in simulation of cognitive phenomena involving sequential processing (e.g., Christiansen et al, 1998;Dell et al, 1993;Elman, 1990;Ernansky, Makula, & Benuskova, 2007;Gupta, 2009;Gupta & Cohen, 2002;Jordan, 1986). The architecture of the model is shown in Fig.…”
