Structure and Chemical Durability of Lead Crystal Glass

Abstract: Silicate glasses containing lead, also called lead crystal glasses, are commonly used as food product containers, in particular for alcoholic beverages. Lead's health hazards require major attention, which can first be investigated through the understanding of Pb release mechanisms in solution. The behavior of a commercial crystal glass containing 10.6 mol % of PbO (28.3 wt %) was studied in a reference solution of 4% acetic acid at 22, 40, and 70 °C at early and advanced stages of reaction. High-resolution so… Show more

“…6a provide more accurate information on the distribution of boron sites in the fibers. The distributions of isotropic NMR shifts are broader in the as-received fibers than in the annealed ones, for both BO 3 and BO 4 groups, as highlighted by the projections onto the isotropic NMR shift axis (Fig. 6b).…”

“…Typically, 1024 scans were accumulated. Two types of 11 B multiplequantum MAS experiments were carried out in order to optimize the signal obtained from BO 3 and BO 4 units, as described previously. 26 29 Si MAS NMR spectra were acquired using a saturation-recovery pulse sequence with a recovery delay of 20 s (increasing the recycling delay did not alter the lineshape).…”

“…Optimizing their chemical durability is of primary importance to ensure the safety of the waste disposal. In the glassware and pharmaceutical industries, both borosilicate and aluminosilicate glasses are designed to contain liquid that must not be contaminated by glass components 7,8 . In nature, aluminosilicate glasses are massively produced by volcanoes and oceanic ridges 9 .…”

“…The chemical characteristics of the Pb-O bond change from ionic character to more covalent when the PbO content increases above 30 mol% to better suit the needs of glass formation of oxide glass network. When the PbO content is increased to over 60 mol%, lead forms its own glassy structure, due to the properties of lead ions to produce glassy network over a wide range of concentrations up to more than 80 mol% PbO if the melt is cooled rapidly[49][50][51]. Pb ions leached from the glazed surfaces are therefore involved in the formation of the corrosion products detected by SEM.…”
