Structural Switching in Luminescent Polynuclear Gold Imidoyl Complexes by Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonding

Abstract: A subtle interplay of coValent bond, hydrogen bond, aurophilic interactions, and steric hindrance controls the nuclearity and the luminescent properties of [Au{2-PyNd C(E)Me}] n (E ) O, NH) complexes. For E ) O a molecular structure with n ) 4 is formed, describing a 20-membered tetrametallacycle. For E ) NH the structure formed shows a trigonal prismatic arrangement of six gold atoms formed by gold-gold interactions between two gold triangles (n ) 3 × 2). Both complexes display luminescent properties.

“…Isocyanide metal complexes are used as polymerization catalysts [22], as molecules for one-dimensional electric conductors [23], and as metallomesogens that behave as liquid crystals [24]. Furthermore, isocyanide metal complexes are precursors of carbene complexes [25], which are also catalytic systems [26], and very useful materials for therapeutic applications [27]. Surprisingly, the great potential of isocyanide derivatives has not been exploited to modulate the properties of PDI systems.…”

“…In contrast to generating the charged catalyst using traditional methods (in situ chloride abstraction by an Ag(I) salt) the use of stable [LAuPR 3 ] + X À complexes with a weakly coordinating ligand (that might be replaced by the alkyne of the reacting enyne) has been developed. 194 Remaining with trigonal clusters, mixed Ag-Au complexes have been obtained from the combination of a gold(I) carbeniate and silver(I) 3,5-diphenylpyrazolate. 179 Aryl carbon-gold bond formation has recently been achieved through the selective transmetallation of boronic acids.…”
