Structural studies of lead lithium borate glasses doped with silver oxide

Abstract: Silver oxide doped lead lithium borate (LLB) glasses have been prepared and characterized. Structural and composition characterization were accessed by XRD, FTIR, Raman, SEM and EDS. Results from FTIR and Raman spectra indicate that Ag(2)O acts as a network modifier even at small quantities by converting three coordinated to four coordinated boron atoms. Other physical properties, such as density, molar volume and optical basicity are also evaluated. Furthermore, they are also affected by the silver oxide comp… Show more

“…The structural role of Pb 2+ ions in the glass network has already been the subject of numerous studies [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. In binary lead glasses, lead atoms are often described as glass former at high lead oxide content and as network modifier at low lead oxide content.…”

“…Such differences in the structural role of Pb 2+ ions would imply significant modifications of their local environments and of their coordination. Earlier studies [5][6][7] consider that the glass forming groups are the [PbO 4 ] units while recent studies [12,13] claim that PbO 3 units or a mixture of the two structural units (PbO 4 , PbO 3 ) are the basic building units in high PbO content glasses.…”

“…The role of silver in the structuring and stability of specific glasses has been recently studied for lead lithium borate glasses [25] as well as for specific sodalime silicate [26][27] and more exotic glasses, such as CaO-Al 2 O 3 -TiO 2 -P 2 O 5 glasses [28] and SiO 2 -CaO-P 2 O 5 ternary systems [29]. As a matter of fact, the process of silver incorporation is often governed by non-equilibrium mechanisms that involve internal local feedbacks between the variables that drive the silver behavior, often preventing classical descriptions based on thermodynamic, chemistry and diffusion equations.…”
