Structural role of Nd2O3 as a dopant material in modified borate glasses and glass ceramics

Abstract: Glasses in the system xNd 2 O 3 -(46-x)B 2 O 3 -27CaO-24.4Na 2 O-2.6 P 2 O 5 (0 ≤ x ≤ 4 mol%) have been prepared via conventional melt quenching technique. X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra have showed that the amorphous structure is dominant in glasses of Nd 2 O 3 concentrations ≤ 0.5 mol%. But formation of a more ordered structure is con rmed at higher Nd 2 O 3 values. Result based on differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) shows an increase in glass transition temperature (T g ) with increasing Nd 2 O 3 at ex… Show more

“…Due to their high transparency, low melting point, great thermal stability, and potent solubilities in rare earth ions, borate-based glass hosts have been demonstrated to be capable of lasing in the NIR range. A particularly good optical medium are borate glasses (3) . The addition of alkaline element improves the chemical stability by modifying the glass network due to their charge transfer with the neighbor host element (4) .…”

“…Glass–ceramics in the barium aluminium borate system were studied by Russel and others 16 18 . Recently, the structural role of Nd 2 O 3 /B 2 O 3 replacement in the borate glasses and glass ceramics based on the 46B 2 O 3 –27CaO–24.4Na 2 O–2.6P 2 O 5 (mol%) system has been studied 19 . The amorphous specimens were synthesized through the melt quenching technique.…”
