Structural Equation Modeling: Strengths, Limitations, and Misconceptions

Abstract: Because structural equation modeling (SEM) has become a very popular data-analytic technique, it is important for clinical scientists to have a balanced perception of its strengths and limitations. We review several strengths of SEM, with a particular focus on recent innovations (e.g., latent growth modeling, multilevel SEM models, and approaches for dealing with missing data and with violations of normality assumptions) that underscore how SEM has become a broad data-analytic framework with flexible and uniqu… Show more

“…In other words, correlation coefficients include all of the effects of variables that affect the dependent variable. For this reason, it is not possible to explain all of the relations between two variables by only using the correlational method (Bentler & Chou, 1987;Keith, 1993;Moore, 1995;MacCallum & Austin, 2001;Brandon, 2002;Martens, 2005;Tomarken & Waller, 2005;Chan et al, 2007). In addition this, we have to say that regression analysis also shows direct relations as predicted between two variables.…”

“…Because the strategy weight indicates only how much participants relied on an exemplar-based strategy or a rule-based strategy, participants classified as following a baseline model in the linear or the multiplicative task were coded as missing on that variable. To avoid excluding all their data, we used a full information maximum likelihood approach to estimate the structural model (Tomarken & Waller, 2005).…”
