Structural dynamic investigation of frame structure with bolted joints

Abstract: Abstract. Frame structure is widely used in many engineering structures. Besides, vibrational problem is one of the main challenges in industry. Bolted joints are commonly used in industry to connect two or more mechanical parts and it plays a significant role in the dynamics characteristic of the structure. This study aims to perform a model updating procedure on a portal frame structure which consists of bolted joints. Modal parameters such as the natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios are gathe… Show more

“…Confirmation for the accuracy of a result obtained in finite element analysis is usually validated by EMA [20][21][22]. The most regularly used technique of conducting the experiment is by using impact hammer as an actuator, an accelerometer as the sensor and a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analyzer to obtain the system Frequency Response Function (FRFs) [23].…”

“…The simulation determines the maximum stress value and deflection of the low loader chassis structure. Analytical study about the bolted joint that is used to to gain the correlation data between experimental modal analysis (EMA) and finite element method (FEM) [19]. It can be assumed that the different results between both methods can be minimized by optimizing the sensitivity of the analysis.…”

“…To model and solve the vibration problems numerically, FEA method was adopted in this study since it has become the most favourable technique in parallel to the development of high computing capability paired with recent advances in numerical methods. As reported by [10], FEA was used in the industry to gain a confidence level in the early design stage, and to analyse the product performance, as well as to predict the dynamic characteristics of the structure definitely.…”

“…In order to verify either the constructed FE model is feasible to represent the actual dynamic behaviour produced by real structure or not, numerous researchers used correlation processes to compare the modal data obtained from FEA with measured counterparts [3,9,10,13,14].From the correlation processes, the level of discrepancy between prediction results and its experimental data were then calculated. The outstanding joint model among RBE2, CBAR, CBEAM and CELAS model with less error percentage was chosen to be treated with FE model updating.…”
