Structural Diversity in Thallium Chemistry. Part V

Abstract: From thallium(III) bromide solution, the unsubstituted pyridinium cation yields a complex (1) with the [Tl 2 Br 9 ] 3À anionic stoichiometry. The Raman spectrum and single-crystal X-ray crystallographic analysis showed that the salt contains independent [TlBr 4 ] À and bromide anions. A variety of mono-and disubstituted pyridinium cations were also employed in similar syntheses. The 2-bromopyridinium cation gave a salt 2 with [TlBr 5 ] 2À stoichiometry, but the crystal structure revealed very weakly interactin… Show more

“…11). The structure is very similar to that found when the pyridinium cation (XVII) was employed [1], with the same relative arrangement of cations and anions, a pseudo-[Tl 2 Br 9 ] 3À grouping, similar unit cell dimensions, and the same space group. The two structures could be described as pseudo-isostructural, with the different cations precluding true isostructurality.…”

“…All of these features are consistent with the notion that the Br À ion is interacting very slightly with the Tl-atom and distorting the [TlBr 4 ] À tetrahedron towards a [TlBr 5 ] 2À trigonal bipyramid. A similar arrangement of anions to that in compound 4 was found in the 2bromopyridinium (XVIII) salt, where the Br À ion is 4.1546(6) from the Tl-atom, and the [TlBr 4 ] À tetrahedron is also distorted very slightly [1]. In this latter case, the distances of the Tl-and the two pseudo-axial Br-atoms from the least-squares equatorial plane defined by the pseudo-equatorial Br-atoms are 0.6777 (3), À 3.3728 (6), and 3.2551 (5) All three of the potential donor H-atoms of the cation in 4 are involved in NÀH ··· Br H-bonding interactions with neighboring Br À ions.…”
