Structural degradation and mechanical fracture of hybrid fabric reinforced composites

Abstract: This investigation involves the study of accelerated environmental aging in two polymer composite laminates reinforced by hybrid fabrics based on carbon, Kevlar and glass fibers. Composite laminate configurations are defined as a laminate reinforced with E-glass fiber and Kevlar 49 fiber hybrid fabric (GK) and another laminate reinforced with E-glass fiber and AS4 carbon fiber hybrid fabric (GC). Both laminates were impregnated with epoxy vinyl ester thermosetting resin (Derakane 470-300) consisting of four la… Show more

“…Observing the results obtained, it is possible to highlight the low content of voids that happens due to the vacuum process utilized after the impregnation by hand lay-up. This low content of voids stands out when compared with present papers in literature, where is presented a value ranging approximately from 2 to 5% [5,30,31].…”

“…Table 3 it is possible to observe the synthesis of the results of the mechanical properties (average values) determined at the three-point bending test as well as the values of the respective standard deviations. Batista et al 16 obtained to the hybrid fabric with glass/ Kevlar in the three-point bending test the values: (143.1 ± 7.9) MPa for flexural strength and (7.5 ±0.6) GPa for flexural modulus.…”

“…Batista et al 16 studied a hybrid composite with o plain bidirectional hybrid fabric, composed of E-glass fiber and Kevlar/49 and as reinforcement and use epoxy vinyl ester thermosetting resin as matrix (Derakane 470-300) and in the uniaxial tensile test was obtained: (106.4±5.8) MPa for tensile strength and (3.9±0.3) GPa for elastic modulus.…”

“…Among these, polymer composite materials, also known as fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) 1,2 , have a special highlight. Included in this category of composite materials there are the plastics reinforced with hybrid fabrics of high mechanical performance, ie, reinforcing fabrics made of synthetic fiber [3][4][5][6] .…”
