Structural deformation phenomenon of synthesized poly(isosorbide-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate) in hot water

Abstract: Water induced deformation phenomena of synthesized polyester including isosorbide shares analogous mechanism of solvent induced crystallization. This structural deformation is effected by pH, open-ring ISB and ester hydrolysis.

“…Isosorbide moieties were also detected, attesting the cleavage of the ester bonds. Interestingly, traces of single-ring opened isosorbide and d -sorbitol were also identified, as previously reported . No toxic compounds were identified from the analysis of the degradation products (e.g., free formaldehyde).…”

“…Interestingly, traces of single-ring opened isosorbide and D-sorbitol were also identified, as previously reported. 52 No toxic compounds were identified from the analysis of the degradation products (e.g., free formaldehyde). Nonetheless, it is a rough assessment and additional analyses are needed to fully determine the nature of the chemicals released from these degradation processes.…”

“…Actually, the total conversion of the raw materials and the molecular weight of products can be obtained by the content of the end group in 1 H NMR. However, the data calculated were inaccurate due to the occurrence of the ISB hydrolysis into 1,4-sorbitan and further formation of the star or cross-linked structure. Accordingly, we tried to discuss the catalytic performances of various catalysts on the viscosity–average value M η .…”

“…First, 1,4-sorbitan may be contained in the raw materials, as the purity of the monomer ISB is not higher than 95%. Second, 1,4-sorbitan is derived from the hydrolysis of ISB during polymerization. ,, In this work, the monomer ISB is controlled to be the same. Thus, 1,4-sorbitan is mostly produced by ISB hydrolysis.…”
