There is a growing awareness towards the use in architecture of construction materials produced in the area in which the buildings are to be implemented. The reduction of environmental impacts derived from the lower consumption of energy in transportation is significant. In addition, the materials used in the façades have special relevance in the value of the annual energy demand. This fact becomes more important in the case of emblematic buildings with social media impact, both for the quality of their design and for the functional contributions they can make. Sometimes, even for purely aesthetic reasons, the paradox of opting for constructive solutions with worse performance, worse aging, a higher cost of maintenance operations or a higher value of annual energy demand is established. In this research the Museum of Fine Arts of Castellón is analyzed, made with cast aluminum recycled panels as a finishing material on the façade. A comparison is made with the alternative scenario, ventilated ceramic façade, of having used large format ceramic panels, produced in the region, where the ceramic sector is a very important cluster. The reduction of the value of the annual energy demand by 12% is evaluated by the improvements established in the ventilated ceramic façade.

In terms of construction and energy efficiency, Spain has one of the highest indexes of obsolete buildings among the developed countries. In the case of high-rise hotel buildings, this problem is further added to by the low levels of safety in the case of fire. The development of tourism in the 1950s and 60s led to the construction of a large number of high-rise hotels with 30+ floors. Initially, they conformed to lax, undemanding regulations regarding fire resistance in their structural components, fire escape routes, protected staircases, and so on. The requirements of today's regulations in this field, contained in the Basic SI Technical Building Code Document, often make the renovation of these buildings an impossible task. Installing specially protected staircases can entail traumatic modifications that are sometimes unviable due to structural conditions or economic considerations. Furthermore, the building's energy efficiency and CO 2 emissions do not correspond to environmentally-friendly practices. This paper examines the above questions with regard to the Hotel Tryp Gran Sol in Alicante, Spain. The hotel is 97 m high and has 31 floors. The integrated renovation of the hotel requires serious reflection upon the building's global response to personal safety, its envelope components and its air conditioning. Architectural solutions and the building's economic viability for future exploitation as an important element in the building's life cycle assesment (LCA) are discussed. Textile Ceramic Technology (TCT) is a new material composed of ceramic units installed in a grid of steel wires. TCT application as a permeable pavement is expected to be a sustainable and aesthetic solution. In order to use TCT as a pavement, experimental research about the mechanical response of TCT placed on elastic foundations is required. The main aim of this paper is to provide the results of this experimental research. Different TCT types were tested in quasi-static and cyclic conditions. The paper presents also a numerical study and a real site application carried out to further evaluate the technology. Experimental, numerical and application results pointed out that TCT is sufficiently competent, from a mechanical point of view, to be used as a pavement for pedestrian and light traffic.
