Structural behavior of recycled tire crumb rubber sandwich panel in flexural bending

Abstract: This study presents the first phase of research, in which recycled tire crumb rubber is used as core in precast concrete sandwich panels. The proposed sandwich panel offers sustainable reuse of waste tires and improved structural efficiency by utilization of natural properties of rubber like high flexibility, thermal and sound insulation. Three types of panels namely solid concrete panel, foam (polystyrene) sandwich panel, and recycled tire crumb rubber sandwich panel are prepared and cast using 50 MPa self‐co… Show more

“…To ensure the consistency of SCC, various lab tests like slump flow test, T 500 , V-funnel test, J-ring, and U-box test were performed at the time of pouring fresh concrete. In addition, concrete cylinder F I G U R E 2 Geometric details of precast sandwich panels (all dimensions are in mm) F I G U R E 3 Recycle tyre crumb rubber sheet 40 specimens of 200 mm  100 mm were taken for material testing. The panels were left for air drying and were later covered in wet jute fabric for curing.…”

“…Ultimate tensile strength of four specimen of recycle tyre crumb rubber 40 displacement, LVDT with a maximum stroke length of 100 mm was used. Whereas for evaluation of strain, electrical strain gauges of 60 mm long with a gauge factor of 118.5 ± 0.5 and resistance of 120 Ω were used.…”

“…The incorporation of 0.5 v/v% steel fibers was efficient to mitigate the detrimental effect of waste expanded polystyrene concrete on the bond properties, leading to higher bearing capacity, ductility, and energy absorption prior to failure. Finally, some research works investigated sandwich panels with cementitious face sheets, using non-structural and thermoacoustically efficient fillers for the core part, including phase change materials [22], polymeric foams [23], or waste insulation filling materials [24]. In the latter respect, it is worth mentioning the research conducted by Awan and Shaikh [24], which adopted an innovative idea of using GWTR as an insulation material for PCSPs.…”

“…The wall panels containing crumb rubber resisted 7% lower axial loads compared to solid concrete wall panels. Awan and Shaikh 25 investigated the flexural behavior of solid concrete wall panels, wall panels containing recycled tyre crumb rubber and wall panels containing EPS foam. The experimental results exhibited that wall panels with recycled tyre crumb rubber exhibited initial crack load, vertical deflection and degree of composite action similar to that of solid concrete wall panels.…”
