Research studies investigating the possibility of using new core material (other than polystyrene) in concrete sandwich panels are being reported in the literature. In this paper, lightweight pervious concrete core is proposed as a new alternative. In this paper, the flexural behaviour of concrete sandwich panels with pervious concrete core is investigated under three-point and four-point bending conditions. The geometrical variables considered are core thickness and number of shear connector lines. Test results showed that, sandwich panels without shear connector trusses failed due to separation of wythes, and the panels with shear connector trusses achieved composite action. The variables considered were found to influence the initial stiffness, cracking moment, ultimate moment, load-deflection behaviour and load-strain behaviour of the panels. Analytical study indicated that the equation given in ACI 318 underestimated the strength of the tested panels. The equation have to be modified by explicitly including the shear connector details in the equation for predicting the flexural strength with reasonable accuracy. Further experimental and analytical studies on prototype concrete sandwich panels with pervious concrete core produced using lightweight aggregates are required in view of developing design guidelines for practical applications.

This study presents the first phase of research, in which recycled tire crumb rubber is used as core in precast concrete sandwich panels. The proposed sandwich panel offers sustainable reuse of waste tires and improved structural efficiency by utilization of natural properties of rubber like high flexibility, thermal and sound insulation. Three types of panels namely solid concrete panel, foam (polystyrene) sandwich panel, and recycled tire crumb rubber sandwich panel are prepared and cast using 50 MPa self‐compacting concrete. A core thickness of 20 mm is provided as insulation in sandwich panels. A total of six specimens having 1100 mm length, 500 mm width, and 100 mm thickness are tested in flexural bending under four‐point loading. The structural performance of crumb rubber sandwich panel is compared against foam panel and solid concrete panel in terms of initial crack load, vertical deflection, critical peak load, strain distribution on concrete surface and in reinforcement, crack pattern, degree of composite action, and deformed shape. Moreover, initial stiffness method at elastic stage and the ultimate strength method at failure is implemented to gauge the percentage of composite behavior in sandwich panels. Both approaches predicted partial composite behavior in all specimens of sandwich panel. The research analysis demonstrated encouraging results in terms of flexural behavior for crumb rubber sandwich panel and feasibility of using it as a structural member in construction industry. The numerical analysis was performed in commercially available software “ABAQUS” in standard/explicit model using in‐built concrete damage plasticity model (CDP). The proposed model is developed as a potential tool for future studies on crumb rubber sandwich panels. The validation phase predicted a good agreement between experimentation and numerical results.

The construction industry involves some of the activities with the highest consumption of raw materials and significant waste production. According to the European Commission, it requires large quantities of resources, representing approximately 50% of all extracted materials, and accounting for over 35% of the EU’s total waste production. In particular, the production and use of concrete, as well as that of EPS (expanded polystyrene), largely exploited for energy-efficient buildings, involve a substantial amount of extracted raw materials and waste. This study focuses on the development of construction materials, such as lightweight and thermally efficient mortars and concretes, incorporating recycled EPS (R-EPS) instead of fine aggregates. Mixtures were designed by partially or completely replacing the fine aggregate with R-EPS on a volume basis. All designed mortars exhibit compressive strength exceeding the minimum values required by Italian legislation and show thermal performance improvements of up to 89.49% compared to the reference mortar. Similarly, the concretes demonstrate strengths compliant with regulations and exhibit thermal characteristic enhancements, ranging from 27.68% for structural lightweight mixes to 74.58% for non-structural ones.
