Structural and transport properties of biaxially aligned YBa2Cu3O7−x films on polycrystalline Ni-based alloy with ion-beam-modified buffer layers

Abstract: Biaxially aligned YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) thin films were produced on polycrystalline Ni-based alloy, by using biaxial yttria-stabilized-zirconia (YSZ) intermediate layers formed by off-normal ion-beam-assisted deposition. Most explicit in-plane alignment was obtained when the YSZ layer formed with the beam-incident angle of 55° from substrate normal. Jc-B characteristics and angular dependence of Jc on the magnetic field were measured. 5.0×105 and 5.5×104 A/cm2 were obtained at 77 K with 0 and 8 T, respectively. T… Show more

“…For coated conductors using YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7− δ 6 and other rare-earth-based cuprates (REBCO), two types of techniques are used to achieve highly in-plane oriented practical metal-tape substrates. One technique is to deposit a biaxially textured buffer-layer on a non-oriented metal-tape by the ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) method78. The other is to use a highly oriented Ni–W alloy metal-tape substrate fabricated by the rolling-assisted biaxially textured substrate (RABiTS) method910.…”

“…Within the IBAD research community, there have been many different cubic metal and metal oxide materials that have been demonstrated to be biaxially textured to some degree. Two of these that were initially used as templates are yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and gadolinium zirconate (GZO) [1,2]. More recently, a third template, magnesia (MgO) has been in use more frequently.…”

“…Issues arising from ''weak-link'' intergrain current transport have led to the development of different methods for their fabrication. The ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) [1][2][3] method is one of the methods being used to create substrate on which highly textured HTS with low angle grain boundaries can conduct large intergrain currents. This method involves the deposition of cubic metal oxide films to form substrates for the CC.…”
