Structural analysis of W7-X: From design to assembly and operation

Abstract: Abstract-The Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) modular stellarator is in the assembly phase at the Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik in Greifswald, Germany. The design of the "basic machine", i.e. without in-vessel components, diagnostics and periphery, is largely completed, structural parameters such as bolt preload, initial conditions for contact elements, etc. are defined, and most of the components are manufactured and partly assembled. Therefore, the focus of structural analysis was shifted towards fast analyses … Show more

“…For D -T fuel, a temperature in the order of 10 8 K is required. A second requirement is that the product of fuel particle density n and confinement time r should be in the range of 10 14 -10 15 s/cm 3 . In magnetic confinement fusion reactors, r is approximately 1s and n is in the range of 10 14 cm -3 .…”

“…Therefore, at full current, the assurance of the mechanical integrity of the central support structure (CSS), coil casings and the inter-coil support system posed a big challenge. This was investigated in detail by finite-element (FE) calculations [21,22] and a solution was found, consisting of a complex system of different support elements.…”

“…The so-called narrow support elements are sliding contacts, while the lateral support elements are welded connections with the exception of the (bolted) inter-module support elements. The support concept is a compromise between stiffness and flexibility of the magnet mechanical system in order to minimize the relative movement of the coils while keeping the maximum stress values within the allowables [2]. The cold mass (coils and support system) is 425 t in total and is cooled with liquid He to 3.4 K. The cold components are in the cryostat volume which is formed by the plasma vessel, the outer vessel and the ports.…”
