Structural analysis of fertilization in the fish Brycon orbignyanus

Abstract: SummaryIn the present work, we analyzed the structure of oocytes and fertilized eggs of the piracanjuba fish (Brycon orbignyanus) under light and scanning electron microscopy. After inducing spawning, samples were collected at the moment of oocyte extrusion, when oocytes and semen were mixed (time 0), as well as at 10, 20 and 30 s after mixing, every minute up to 10 min, and then at 15 and 20 min. The oocytes are spherical, translucent and greenish with a mean diameter of 1.3 ± 0.11 mm. During the extrusion, c… Show more

“…The micropyle is a small opening in the zona radiata, composed of the vestibule and micropylar channel that reaches the oocyte's plasmatic membrane and participates in the fertilization process (Ganeco and Nakaghi, ). In this study, oocytes of both species showed a funnel‐shaped micropyle, a common pattern similar to other Characiformes species (Ganeco et al., ; Alexandre et al., ; Isaú et al., ).…”

“…The diameter of oocytes of B. gouldingi was small and typical of migratory species that exhibit spawning and external fertilization with no parental care (Vazzoler, ). The diameters recorded in this study were similar to those reported in congeneric species such as matrinxã Brycon cephalus (Günther 1869) (Romagosa et al ., ) and piracanjuba Brycon orbignyanus (Valenciennes 1850) (Ganeco et al ., ).…”

“…During fertilization, a large number of spermatozoa compete to fertilize a single oocyte, as observed at the micropylar region in the hybrid egg 30 seconds after fertilization. Freire-Brasil (2001) and Ganeco et al (2008), analyzing fertilization in Prochilodus lineatus and Brycon orbinyanus, reported that several spermatozoa reach and pass through the micropyle, reinforcing the development of distinct strategies in fish to avoid polyspermy. Hart (1990) pointed out some of them, such as: the presence of chorion as well as micropyle, modifications in the site of spermatozoon entrance, obstruction of the micropylar canal and inhibition of spermatozoa by fluids from the perivitelline space.…”
