Structural Adhesives Tapes Based on a Solid Epoxy Resin and Multifunctional Acrylic Telomers

Abstract: Thermally curable pressure-sensitive structural adhesives tapes (SATs) were compounded using a solid epoxy resin and multifunctional acrylic telomer solutions (MATs) prepared by a thermally initiated telomerization process in an epoxy diluent containing two kinds of telogens (CBr4 or CBrCl3). Dynamic viscosity, K-value, and volatile mater content in MATs (i.e., MAT-T with CBr4, MAT-B with CBrCl3) were investigated in relation to telogen type and content. The influence of MATs on the self-adhesive features and … Show more

“…Due to its excellent mechanical properties, bond properties, insulation properties, thermal stability, alkali resistance, stable chemical properties, and low cost, epoxy adhesive is now widely used in bonding metal or non-metal with thermosetting materials [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ], such as the bonding layer between ultrahigh performance concrete (UHPC) and a thin asphalt layer, or the bond of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) with fatigue damaged steel structures. However, such examples require epoxy adhesives to have excellent mechanical properties, surface roughness, and toughness, yet unmodified epoxy adhesive composites are too brittle and vulnerable to cracking [ 7 , 8 , 9 ].…”

“…They are commonly used as matrix materials in composites, which are extensively applied in the aerospace and automotive industries to produce lightweight, high-strength parts [ 35 ]. Epoxy resins are also popular as adhesives, sealants, and coatings due to their excellent adhesive properties and chemical resistance [ 36 ]. They are used to bond a variety of materials, making them essential in many industrial applications, particularly in the construction industry, where they are used to repair and strengthen concrete parts or protect steel structures from corrosion and wear [ 37 ].…”

“…Epoxy resins are widely used as matrices in advanced composites, massively applied in industries such as construction, aerospace, marine and automotive for lightweight and mechanically strong parts [ 24 ]. Other applications of epoxy resins include coatings, sealants and adhesives, because of their outstanding adhesive properties and chemical resistance [ 25 ]. In construction, epoxy resins are applied in repairing and strengthening concrete and anticorrosion and wear-protection agents for steel structures [ 26 ].…”
