Strontium Incorporation on Microspheres of Alginate/β-tricalcium Phosphate as Delivery Matrices

Abstract: Strontium (Sr) is known to positively affect the mechanism of bone remodelling. Consequently, calcium phosphate bioceramics associated with alginate matrices containing strontium could improve bone regeneration due to gradual strontium release. This work aims to incorporate Sr on microspheres of alginate (ALG)/β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) and evaluates the in vitro release of strontium ions into a buffer solution at pH 4.0 and 7.4. In this study, strontium chloride was employed as a cross-linking agent and S… Show more

“…The peak around 1635 cm –1 corresponds to the bending vibration of O–H . The bands at 1417 and 1335 cm –1 are asymmetric and symmetric stretching vibrations of carboxylate groups −COOH and the characteristic vibration of C–O–C bond, respectively. , The peak at 891 cm –1 is ascribed to the stretching modes of the shortest Ti–O bonds. , This peak, after ion-exchange, becomes weaker, suggesting the partial replacement of Na + by the targeted cations. The peak at 891 cm –1 disappeared after HCl treatment, due to the existence of a large amount of H + in the interlayer, and reconstructed after Na treatment.…”

“…Fourier‐transformation infrared spectroscopy analysis of the hybrid samples are outlined in Figures and , wherein functional groups pertaining to β‐TCP and HA were detected. In BG1 and BG2, phosphate bands pertaining to β‐TCP were observed at 1120, 1080, 1043, 945, 604, and 553 cm −1 ; whereas those associated with HA were detected at 1010, 980, 590, and 565 cm −1 ; a hydroxyl group indicative of HA was detected at 3570 cm −1 in 1200 and 1250°C …”

“…In addition, stretching of N-H groups coupled with hydrogen bonding (amid A) and amid B bonding (C-H stretching) at broad band ranging from 3200 to 3600 cm −1 is ascribed to the collagen characteristic peak (Payne and Veis 1988). The spectrum of β-TCP exhibited the characteristic spectral bands at 1119, 1079, 1027, 976 and 947 cm −1 attributed to vibrational mode of P3O43- (Moreira et al 2014). As can be seen, both characteristics peaks of the collagen and β-TCP are observed in the FT-IR spectrum of Collagen-TCP composite sample.…”
