Strong Motion Measurement Using Security Video Cameras

Abstract: A dense network of strong motion measurement is significant for the earthquake hazard mitigation. To realize such a network, this paper proposes a strong motion measurement using video images recorded in security video cameras. Even though the accuracy is sacrificed to some extent, this measurement enables us to use video cameras as maintenance-free and simple apparatus which are installed in many buildings. The image analysis and the inversion are developed. Several tests were carried out to verify the validi… Show more

“…Therefore, it is generally difficult to retrieve the ground motion from the video recordings without knowing the characteristics of the video camera and the site in which it is installed. SAITO et al, (1997) andHORI et al, (2000) discussed the theoretical framework of using video information to retrieve strong motion parameters. One of the difficulties in using this method is that the parameters of the video camera, such as the installation conditions, have to be known, which is hardly realistic for the case of Wenchuan earthquake.…”

“…Since it is not necessary to attach devices directly to the object, it is easy to install the system in various kinds of environment. There is an example of application of a surveillance camera for input motion measurements (Hori 2000). If existing surveillance cameras are available, we have only to add the data processing system for vision-based measurements to the existing system.…”

“…These techniques have been utilized for monitoring movement of objects especially in laboratories [1][2][3][4]. There is also an example of application of a surveillance camera for input motion measurements [5].…”
