Strong light scattering and broadband (UV to IR) photoabsorption in stretchable 3D hybrid architectures based on Aerographite decorated by ZnO nanocrystallites

Abstract: In present work, the nano- and microscale tetrapods from zinc oxide were integrated on the surface of Aerographite material (as backbone) in carbon-metal oxide hybrid hierarchical network via a simple and single step magnetron sputtering process. The fabricated hybrid networks are characterized for morphology, microstructural and optical properties. The cathodoluminescence investigations revealed interesting luminescence features related to carbon impurities and inherent host defects in zinc oxide. Because of … Show more

“…The growth details and properties of aerographite have already been described in detail in previous works. 17,[23][24][25] The combination of custom template design and adjustment of the following CVD process for aerographite production enables tailorable properties of the material. The microstructure of aerographite is dened by the template morphology which is actually made from 3D networks of ZnO tetrapods.…”

“…However, this approach involves a complex process: in order to get uniform white light distribution, driving currents of LED chips emitting different wavelengths must be matched, and their individual responses to aging and temperature should be balanced in every multichip device. In the second approach, a single UV or blue LED device can be combined in a LED package with a color conversion layer consisting of inorganic phosphor (pigment) particles such as oxide and nitride derivatives and also their association with a transparent polymer resin . This strategy is known as phosphor‐converted WLED (pc‐WLED).…”

“…Under this assumption, the methods involved in trying to incorporate carbon into ZnO employ extreme off‐equilibrium processes such as pulsed laser deposition . Other efforts focused on decorating ZnO with carbon or vice‐versa and do not consider direct incorporation of carbon into ZnO.…”
