Strong effect of the simultaneous color contrast in an afterimage

Abstract: The color appearance of the afterimage of the simultaneous color contrast pattern was investigated by the elementary color naming method. The color appearances of the surrounding, an afterimage of the surrounding, and the test patch were measured, and the results were shown on the polar diagram of the opponent colors theory. The colors of both the surrounding and the afterimage of the test patch were the same. The relationship between the afterimage color of the test patch and the afterimage of the surrounding… Show more

“…Complementary color has seemed to occur in other phenomena, for example, in afterimages 19,20 and simultaneous color contrasts. 21,22 In this article, we found another complementary color relation, as shown in Figures 9 and 10. There was an agreement with a previous experiment researched by Phuangsuwan and Ikeda,23 in which they studied a subject's perception under colored illumination.…”

“…A complementary color is a pair of monochromatic lights that, when mixing two chromaticities, can produce white light. Complementary color has seemed to occur in other phenomena, for example, in afterimages 19,20 and simultaneous color contrasts 21,22 . In this article, we found another complementary color relation, as shown in Figures 9 and 10.…”

“…Ikeda and Phuangsuwan 50 describe a strong simultaneous contrast effect in afterimages, similar in strength to the two‐room technique. Kingdom et al 51 describe experiments showing that afterimages, believed to be formed in postreceptoral layers of the retina, are represented in the cortex similar to the real image counterparts at cortical level.…”

“…In this article, the authors propose an alternative method called the elementary color naming 18,19 which is similar to hue scaling 20,21 to study color constancy under various colored illumination especially vivid lights, and the perception color scale. The authors studied color constancy in a real room as a three-dimensional aspect is one of the factors that improve color constancy index.…”
